内容简介

FOREWORDIN 1958, my wife's near-terminal asthma and my own crip-pling food allergies prompted me to seek a method for increasingthe reliability of skin tests and injection therapy for foods. Fornearly a century, most allergists--including my peers andteachers--had felt that food skin tests were of little value, andthat food injection therapy was useless. My method was to limit testing to a single food at a time, using various dilutions of the food extract, to study correlationsbetween antigen strengths and wheal sizes. At first, I couldfind no useful wheMing pattern, but it became apparent veryearly that I was provoking symptoms with some dilutions andrelieving them with other dilutions of the same extract. A longseries of such observations led to the development of a highlyaccurate skin test procedure, and an effective method of foodinjection therapy, as related in detail in this book. As so often happens in medical investigation, the results ofmy discoveries have far exceeded my original aim. Forexample, I have been able to modify the food technique todevelop more effective methods of testing and treating for in-halant antigens, Rhus and other contact dermatitides, Hymen-optera stings, insect bites, drug reactions, fungus and yeastinfections, and many other problems that plague and endangerallergic patients. My beginnings are being amplified by the efforts of others,so that this small stone I cast into the allergy pond is pro-ducing large waves of everwidening application. Dr. Theron Randolph discovered the fact that my techniquescould be used to relieve many chemically sensitive patients byusing synthetic ethanol and other chemical antigens for test-ing and therapy. Edward L. Binkley, Jr., has applied thismethod to treatment of symptoms caused by gaseous osmyls, odors, air pollutants, and the terpenes emanating from natural
