There is no single??? generally accepted system for transposing the spell-
ing of Mongolian words from Mongolian or Cyrillic script to the letters
of the Roman alphabet. Scholarly works by specialists in Mongolian
studies employ a system that is highly accurate but (because it uses
special letters and diacritical marks) is generally unintelligible to the
untrained reader. Popular works on Mongolia use a great variety of
systems??? so that??? for example??? the name Genghis Khan might also be
rendered Genghiz??? Jenghis??? Chinggis??? and so on. Many authors replace
~Kh\" with \"H???\" so that??? for example??? the Khangai Region becomes the
Hangai Region.
In this book??? we have tried to adhere to a simple utilitarian principal:
Mongolian names are given in the forms in which they are most likely
to be encountered in other works--especially reference works--on
Mongolia??? and which??? when pronounced by an ordinary reader of En-
glish??? will yield a reasonable approximation of the sound of spoken
Mongolian. For geographical names??? we follow the usage of The Ne~
York Times Atlas of the World??? except in a few instances where the atlas
spelling has been altered to conform to the spelling used elsewhere in
this book (for example??? Altai and Choibalsan).
