Schimper，German botanist, born in Strasbourg, NE France. He studied at the University of Strasbourg, was a fellow at Johns Hopkins (1880–1), then became professor at Bonn (to 1898) and Basel (1898–1901). Widely travelled, he was noted as a plant geographer, and divided the continents into floral regions. He established in 1880 that starch is a source of stored energy for plants
