达赖喇嘛格鲁派最高领袖之一,达赖喇嘛尊号和其转世制度始于第三世达赖喇嘛索南嘉措。公元1578年,藏历第十饶迥阳土虎年,明神宗万历六年,当时格鲁派大活佛索南嘉措应土默特蒙古首领顺义王俺达汗邀请赴蒙古传法,在青海仰华寺,索南嘉措对佛理的精深阐述,使俺达汗心生仰慕,于是赠送尊号“圣识一切瓦齐尔达喇达赖喇嘛”的称号。“圣”,是超凡入圣,超出尘世间之意;“识一切”,是藏传佛教对在现宗方面取得最高成就僧人的尊称;“瓦齐尔达喇”,是梵文Vajradhra的音译,即汉语执金刚之意,是藏传佛教对于在密宗方面取得最高成就僧人的尊称;“达赖”,是蒙古语大海之意,也是借用藏语“嘉措”(大海)一词而译成蒙古语的,因为二世达赖根敦嘉措、三世达赖索南嘉措名字中都含有“嘉措”;“喇嘛”,藏语是上师之意,是对有一定佛学造诣僧人的尊称。公元1652年,藏历第十一饶迥阳水龙年,清世祖顺治九年,五世达赖阿旺洛桑嘉错应顺治帝邀请赴京觐见,并正式被册封为“西天大善自在佛所领天下释教普通瓦赤喇怛喇达赖喇嘛”,并赐金印金册。

作者简介


牙含章,1916年10月生于甘肃和政县。1936年开始在拉卜楞寺和拉隆哲蚌寺研究藏族史和藏传佛教。1938年在陕甘宁边区关中分区陕北公学学习。曾任中共西藏工委秘书长、内蒙古大学副校长,中国无神论学会副会长,中国社会科学院民族研究所所长。1989年12月病逝。长期从事民族宗教问题研究,主要著作有《达赖喇嘛传》、《班禅额尔德尼传》、《无神论和宗教问题》等。主编《中国无神论史》。
