荣格早年曾与弗洛伊德合作，一度受到弗洛伊德的器重，被弗洛伊德任命为第一届国际精神分析学会主席，后因观点不合与弗洛伊德决裂。荣格强调精神的先定倾向，反对弗洛伊德的自然主义立场。他提出的原型理论和集体无意识（亦译为潜意识）观点突破了弗洛伊德的力比多和无意识理论的思路与领域。荣格从原型理论和集体无意识这些观点出发，把他的心理学理论广泛应用于社会各个领域，对人类文明发展、时代精神潮流、文学艺术与宗教等方面都进行了深入细致的思考，为心理学的发展做出了巨大贡献。
