内容简介

Doesn t everyone who watched a convention,

a space shot or the evening news in the sixties

remember that pretty, effervescent girl who

seemed to be everywhere at once, and toward

whose microphone Presidents, senators and

Cabinet officers seemed to make a beeline?

Among Those Present is Nancy Dickerson s

story of those times when she was the first female

national-network news correspondent, of the

years of competition and hard work in a man s

world that preceded her prominence, and of her

marriage, childbearing and career as a success-

ful lecturer that followed.

In 1951 Nancy Hanschman, a wide-eyed

idealistic, convent-educated girl from Ameri-

ca s Heartland (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, "where

nothing ever happened") arrived in Washington

to change the world. By persistent effort and

charm she was hired as a staff member of the

Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and re-

ceived her initiation with Senator McCarthy s

attack on it. The fear and cowardice of those

years were a rude shock, and she grew up

quickly. But because she was a woman, the job

had its limitations, and within a couple of years

she joined CBS. There, with the rise of televi-

sion, she came to prominence as that enchanting

reporter who always seemed to be in the right

spot at the right time, more than holding her

own with her male competitors because she

asked tough questions and stood out in a crowd.

In fact, she scored so many beats that it was

perhaps understandable that some male corre-

spondents made life tougher for her; the barriers

that were thrown in her way ranged from petty

inconveniences to whispers that her scoops had

more to do with her sex than with pounding

the pavements. ~
